Text description provided by the architects. This project is a reconstruction project of an old house, located in the ancient community of Xiaohuangpu, Ronggui, Shunde district. The owner is a professional painter, and it’s a family of three. The owner’s original intention is to move away from the frozen commercial house and build a warm home that contains a studio, pottery, plants, and pets to meet the needs of daily living. The functional areas of the building: the first floor contains the dining room, Chinese and Western cuisine, the courtyard and the pottery cooking space; The second floor is the living room, guest bedroom and utility room. The third floor is the master bedroom and the children’s bedroom, and the fourth floor is the studio.

The relationship between the building and its surroundings. The project is located in a former community developed in the 1970s and 1980s, the road is narrow and the distance from adjacent buildings is narrow. There is no safe distance from neighboring houses. At the same time, with the aging of the community, most of the old original neighbors have moved and many old houses are vacant or rented to migrant workers. As the surrounding population is relatively mobile, the owners also want to take the issue of safety fully into account.

Therefore, on the ground floor of the building adjacent to the street, a high side window and a glazed door to the courtyard are adopted as the main mode of lighting, effectively blocking the view of pedestrians to the street from the ground floor. – floor. The living room on the second floor has a bay window overlooking the west park to ensure good daylight, and which is the main daylight. Using the calculation of the distance from the road and the height of the first layer, let the living room retreat inward, the distance of which is the width of a balcony, to avoid the line of sight of people on the streets for see the lives of residents, which the pedestrian can only see the smallpox condolences of the living room as they walk through it.

The relationship between the building and the sunlight. Due to the rectangular topography of the building, it has a depth of almost 13 meters. Below the second floor, with the exception of the front and the west of the facade, the other facades are mainly connected to the neighbors. In order to avoid most of the lights will be blocked in the future due to the reconstruction of the surrounding buildings. The central area of the building is defined as the main vertical traffic, and all positions except stairs and walkways are turned into empty spaces. Combined with the corresponding skylights on the roof, the light can be radiated into the space from the central part of the building to increase the interior natural light. At the same time, the living room faces the west side, using the different angles of the path of the winter and summer sun, the living room retreated to the balcony position, so that there is no of direct summer sunlight in the living room, and in winter you can enjoy the warm afternoon sun.

The relationship between the building and the landscape. As there is no good natural landscape around the project, the designer wanted to create landscapes inside the building. First, the ground floor retracts inward, the courtyard space is enlarged to meet the owner’s daily gardening and catering landscape. The second and third floors take advantage of the central empty space and the position of the stairs to plant houseplants as interior landscaping space. Locals can enjoy nature in the living room anytime. The skylights and large glass windows on the fourth floor produce the best scenery in the sky.

The relationship between the building and the people. To increase communication between the people who live in this building and prevent the spaces of each floor from being too separated, in the design, staggered floors and empty space are combined between the second and fourth floor. On the one hand, people can see each other on every floor. On the other hand, thanks to the height of the floor 1.5 times, the perception of the living room space is improved, and large paintings can be hung in the workshop. The difference in air pressure generated by the empty and divided layers, the windows at different heights and the differences in interior temperature strengthen the interior airflow and make the space more airy and breathable in the meantime.
